One of the most common problems we treat is mitral insufficiency. As your heart contracts, the left ventricle pumps the blood out of the aorta.The mitral valve closes, directing the flow of blood out of the aorta. In patients who have mitral insufficiency, the blood goes back into the left atrium instead
Symptoms of mitral insufficiency include:
- Shortness of breath
- Lower tolerance for exercise
However, patients can have no symptoms. If left untreated, even asymptomatic mitral insufficiency could lead to worse symptoms and more severe complications.
